Why are travel vaccinations necessary?
When travelling to more exotic countries, chances are, you may expose yourself to pathogens that you have no protection against. This kind of protection is commonly known as immunity, hence the term “immunisation.” Exposure to these pathogens will result in infections and diseases such as Yellow Fever and Hepatitis A, which will eventually lead to illness. These illnesses can be very severe or even fatal in some cases. Getting the vaccination against these infections will keep you safe from them as you continue your travels. Travel vaccines are extremely vital, considering some of these illnesses can be life-threatening.
How do travel vaccines work?
Travel vaccines are very similar in terms of how they work, and there are many varieties that offer immunity against numerous diseases. Basically, your body gets a solution that mimics the pathogen in question through an injection. This triggers the production of antibodies that fight the pathogen in question. Therefore, your immune system will be in a position to defend your body when you expose yourself to the virus or bacteria.
In most cases, you should receive the vaccination at least 21 days before the date of your departure. Some vaccines such as Rabies require a more extended time before travel. This will give your body enough time to develop the antibodies necessary to ensure maximum protection.
When Should I Start Finding Out What Vaccines I Need?
We would advise making an appointment to discuss travel vaccinations at least 6-8 weeks before you are planning to travel. At your first appointment, we will discuss your travel itinerary, recommend vaccinations and anti-malarial tablets if required and discuss any health issues you may have to ensure you leave feeling confident about your trip abroad.
Whilst we recommend scheduling your first appointment 6-8 weeks before you travel, we can accommodate last-minute travellers.
Subsequent appointments will be booked after the initial appointment, at a time convenient for the traveller.
Which Travel Vaccines Do I Need?
Our Pharmacist will discuss your itinerary with you and will advise on all the vaccinations or antimalarials that will be required for your trip.
Some countries require proof of vaccination which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country. Even if this certificate is not required, it’s still a good idea to take a record of the vaccinations you have had with you.
Pricing of additional treatments will vary depending on the duration of travel, a number of stops, etc, and can cover :
- Antimalarials
- Altitude Sickness
If you are uncertain about what vaccinations you have had, please obtain a copy of your immunisation record from your GP. Please also bring it with you to your appointment.
